Attention to defense infrastructure and combat readiness constitutes one of the critical requirements for long-term planning in the domain of hyper-challenges within the defense-security sphere. What parameters will influence these challenges and the environmental conditions of future warfare in the international system? It appears that the environmental conditions and characteristics of future conflicts, given the advancement of emerging technologies and their undeniable impact on defense-security challenges, will increasingly shift toward hybrid, intelligent, and fluid warfare. The staggering growth of information and communication technologies—what we term the information revolution—represents a formidable wave that will fundamentally alter the nature and characteristics of war and conflict. Additional factors such as shifts in actor composition, battle environments, and the focus on intelligent systems will similarly influence warfare conditions and, consequently, defense structures. This study employs futures research methodology with a qualitative-interpretive approach and descriptive-analytical framework, utilizing existing data (documentary/library sources) to examine, analyze, and scrutinize probable defense challenges and future conflicts over the next two decades in the international arena, as well as their implications for the defense-security environment of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
