U.S. policy toward the Islamic Republic of Iran during the Trump administration (marked by America’s formal withdrawal from the JCPOA on May 8, 2018) is referred to as the "Maximum Pressure Campaign." During this period, tensions in Iran-U.S. relations reached their peak, and the risk of military conflict between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the United States and its allies was higher than ever before. The Islamic Republic of Iran endured the most severe economic sanctions ever imposed on a country during this time. The research question is: What was the U.S. objective in pursuing the Maximum Pressure Campaign against the Islamic Republic of Iran? The research hypothesis posits that the U.S. Maximum Pressure Campaign represented an effort to balance power in Western Asia against Iran. The research findings indicate that the Americans sought to weaken Iran and collapse its economy through economic sanctions in order to reduce Iran’s agency, while simultaneously strengthening the power of their allied countries in the region and forming regional alliances to establish a balance against Iran. The theoretical framework of the article is based on the balance of power and offensive realism. The present study employs a descriptive-analytical research method and has utilized documentary/library research methods to gather the required data.
