A Research Evolution and Approach Assessment of Iranian International Relations Scholarship can delineate the current state and the rung of the scientific ladder we stand upon based on reality (what is), and through such research, it becomes possible to chart a path for elevating Iranian international relations scholarship (what ought to be) grounded in scientific pathology. Drawing on the findings of the author’s prior research in this field, we have observed that Iranian international relations scholarship, particularly in discussions concerning neighborhood politics and Asian politics (centered on national interests and expediency), suffers from a form of chronic theoretical poverty. Accordingly, in the present study, 614 Iranian international relations scientific-research articles published between 2019 and 2022 were examined using Constructivist Grounded Theory and Categorical Content Analysis based on theoretical keywords. The findings reveal that Iranian international relations scholars seldom scrutinize the variable of the Islamic Republic of Iran’s foreign policy performance (whether positive or negative) in their analyses of Iran’s neighborhood and Asian affairs, exhibiting a meaningful research silence in this academic domain -a phenomenon that may signal symptoms of an acute and untreated "Kissinger Syndrome." Furthermore, a significant portion of Iranian international relations researchers regard U.S. foreign policy behavior as an influential intervening variable in Iran’s neighborhood and Asian politics, examining international issues through the lens of great power roles. Here, the lack of attention to cultural-historical precedents in foreign relations, geopolitical issues, and border delimitation concerns, the absence of efforts to propose solutions for maintaining and expanding foreign relations within the framework of neighborhood policy, the non-applicability of research, the failure to diagnose the causes behind the weakening of certain foreign relations, and a discernible pessimistic outlook toward the performance of international organizations are all evident -requiring further investigation and root-cause analysis in future studies.
