The present study aims to conduct an ethnographic examination of the lifestyle of Instagram users, with a focus on female psychology students at the Islamic Azad University, Qods City Branch, using the Grounded Theory method (Strauss and Corbin’s systematic approach). This research seeks, through a qualitative perspective and from the lens of digital anthropology, to achieve a deeper understanding of the meanings, patterns, processes, and consequences of this specific group’s presence on the Instagram social network. The participants consisted of 28 female psychology students from the Islamic Azad University, Qods City Branch, who were selected through theoretical sampling. Data were collected through in‑depth semi‑structured interviews and non‑interventionist observation of Instagram profiles, and were analyzed using MAXQDA software. The data analysis process was carried out in three stages of coding. From an anthropological perspective, the findings indicate that the lifestyle of this group of users on Instagram is a complex, multilayered, and dialectical phenomenon that cannot be reduced merely to content consumption, entertainment, or even self‑presentation. Rather, this lifestyle constitutes a field for an identity‑construction project in which individuals actively and consciously engage in the selective representation of the self. The final grounded theory, titled “Identity Exchange under Specialized Surveillance: The Formation of Patchwork Identity in the Instagram Display Field,” was developed. This theory suggests that female psychology students, when confronted with conflicting expectations, utilize their specialized knowledge as an “inner observer” to engage in the “dramaturgical structuring of the self.” The final outcome of this exchange is a “patchwork identity”—a flexible yet fragile identity that allows adaptation to different situations while simultaneously challenging psychological continuity
